Joseph A. Wellman, retired teacher and author, was interviewed recently at TheBookInsider.com about his first novel “The Private Lives of Teachers.”

This is a story of teachers and their lives, their personal lives; the lives one rarely reads or hears about because most fictional stories about teachers feature situations in which the lives of students are the focus. This fictional story, set in a suburban high school, focuses upon the lives of teachers beyond the classroom as the reader follows them into their lounge, their relationships, their pasts, and their secrets. “The Private Lives of Teachers” is the story of fourteen Payson High School social studies teachers, an eclectic group with unique and troubling backgrounds, struggling with the basic needs, demands, and issues of life. Follow them for one full year and discover their world beyond the classroom.

THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: Please tell us a little about “The Private Lives of Teachers.” And what compelled you to write it?

JOSEPH A. WELLMAN: This is a story that goes beyond the usual image our society has of teachers and examines their personal lives. The story does not delve into their teaching abilities instead; it’s their personal lives and relationships that we read about. It’s a side of teachers rarely explored in stories dealing with the teaching profession.

I wrote it because almost everything I’ve ever read about teachers it seems as if the focus is always on the students. There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact that’s why we’re in the business, but I felt there should be another story, one in which the focus is on teachers and what’s going on in their lives. I wanted something that went beyond the image.

THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: Although “The Private Lives of Teachers” is a fictional account about the private lives of teachers, how much of the book is based on your actual experiences during your teaching career?

JOSEPH A. WELLMAN: Ninety-five percent of my teacher experiences forms the basis of this novel. If you could hear the comments of my fellow retired teachers, who have read the book and lived through the time I write about, you would know that the book is based upon my experiences as a teacher. They recognize certain people or even themselves but know the stories I wove are fiction. Was there a teacher who wanted to be an administrator but was turned down by a “good ole boy” principal? Yes, and unfortunately she did die of cancer. Were gays ever invited to talk with a sociology class? Yes. Was there ever a parental controversy about the speakers? Again the answer is yes, but the real situation was a lot more involved and heated.

THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: This novel features the stories of teachers and their lives that takes place beyond the classroom. In a nutshell, what would you tell us about the human lives of teachers outside the classroom that the average student or former-student may not realize?

JOSEPH A. WELLMAN: First of all what I wrote takes place within a year’s time. If I were to put it in real time, it would take a minimum of ten years. I compressed everything and I exaggerated in order to make a more readable story. To answer your question you have to separate the teachers into the two camps; married and single. Most of the single teacher lives are not much different from singles working in the business world. As for the married teachers, I think students might be surprised that their teachers’ lives are no different from their parents’ lives. Teachers fall in love and marry. Teachers have affairs, divorce and remarry. Teachers have personal problems.

Mr. Wellman is a retired teacher who has spent thirty-five years teaching high school psychology and sociology in Illinois. He’s also taught journalism and advised the publishing of school newspapers and yearbooks.

“The Private Lives of Teachers” is his first novel. Prior to “…Private Lives…” he wrote two unpublished plays. His second novel, “Payson Heights,” will be published in 2006. At the present time he is writing his third novel.

Joseph Wellman lives with his wife, Ellie, in Elk Grove Village, a suburb northwest of Chicago.

When he’s not writing he’s golfing, working on the house, and until recently he was teaching people to fly.

In his thirty-five years of teaching he has taught at Joliet East, Kankakee, and McLean-Waynesville high schools. His other work experiences include a stint at radio station WCAZ, Carthage, Illinois, and as a part time reporter for a local newspaper.
